The used car market starts 2023 with a decrease of 5%
The black streak continues for the used passenger car market, which in January 2023 suffered its thirteenth consecutive decline. Registrations fell 5% in the first month, to 415,626 units, according to data from NGC-Data.

Unlike the new car market, which confirmed its recovery in January 2023, the used car market continues to decline. Registrations fell 5% in January 2023, to 415,626 units (437,331 last year). An additional working day in this first month of the year did little to reduce the decline. valid, the second-hand market is mainly chained with a double-digit decline in the period from June to December 2022.
In France, you have to go back to November 2021 (+ 5%) to find traces of the last increase for used car registrations. Thus, the market remains in thirteen consecutive months of decline. For comparison, it registered 483,961 VO in January 2021, 502,855 in 2020, 446,805 in 2019 or 442,854 in 2018.

A more unbalanced used car market
The segment of cars less than one year old fell by 20.1% in this first month, with a total of 23,734 units and weighing only a small market share of 5.7% (compared to 11.6% in January 2020, for example). The shortage of products also affects the used car part of 2-4 years, down 11.2% over the month, to 57,395 units (13.8% share). The 1-2 year old car segment posted a 3.3% increase in January, but only accounted for a 4.5% share of registrations (18,637 units). The NGC-Wiz tool shows that used cars over 15 years old, that is, cars registered for the first time before 2008, increased by 6%, with a total of 115,766 units. It had a 28% market share, compared to 21% in 2020 or 22.6% in 2021.

The 5-6 year old used car segment fell by 1.9% (21,378 units; share of 5.1%) and the 6-8 year old product by 2.8% (33,292; 8%). According to data from NGC-Data, used cars aged 5+ years accounted for 69.1% of the second-hand market. The segment of used vehicles aged 8 years and above accounts for 56% of registrations.

208 and 2008 market leader for used cars less than 1 year old
The Renault Clio maintained its position as the best-selling second-hand car in France this month (all age segments combined), with a volume twice that of its rival, the Citroën C3. The Peugeot 208 completes the podium. The Volkswagen Golf remains firmly anchored in the top 5.
In the segment of cars registered less than a year ago, particularly affected by the lack of metal and heavily supplied by the channel of short-term rental companies, it is the Peugeot 208 that leads the registrations, ahead of the Peugeot 2008 and the Dacia Sandero. The first Renault, the Clio, was only in eighth position.
