Dennis Schroder was surprised by his muscular arrest by the Los Angeles police
In the context rekindled by the killing of Tire Nichols by five police officers, Dennis Schroder He will never forget the misfortune he experienced on Wednesday night after the Lakers and Spurs meeting,
The German leader also had to deal with the muscular methods of the California police. Fortunately, although the tension quickly subsided, Dennis Schroder was surprised by this exchange and especially the aggressiveness of the police who suspected him of stealing a “Sprinter” van in which he was with his driver. It was actually an error with the license plate not matching the correct vehicle…
“It happened after the match. I laced up my recovery boots for my treatment and we started rolling. I was watching “Uncle Charlie” like I always do and Alex was driving. So we started driving and we heard the sirens and we saw the blue lights. We thought they just wanted to pass us. But a voice said, “Please take the next exit and stop. Alex opened the window separating us to tell me we were being caught. So I said, “OK, do whatever they say and we won’t have any problems.” They then asked Alex to get out of the car without making any sudden movements. Then large torches lit the back of the Sprinter to see who was inside. I had my Normatec system with me, so I got dressed very slowly so they couldn’t see that I was moving. I slowly took off the Normatec to put on pants, because I was doing my treatment without them. And then someone said, “Hey, I see you there, don’t hide,” and he asked me to come out. I finished dressing and slowly opened the door”.
Handcuffed and stocked on the pavement
That’s when the situation almost came to a head as Dennis Schroder quickly found himself handcuffed and surrounded by several armed officers. Something to destabilize, especially when you’re sure you’re in the right.
“They told me: ‘Turn away from us and come slowly.’ So I had to turn around and walk towards them, I had to do all this in my head. Of course, I did everything they told me and I followed their instructions. And when I got to them, they put their hands behind my back and handcuffed me very aggressively. I did not understand what was happening. Then they told me that the car was not mine, that it was stolen. I answered no, that there was a mistake, that it’s my car. But the license plate is from a Cadillac. Then I said that the Cadillac is also a car of mine, which I sold a year ago”.
Fortunately, Dennis Schroder did not rebel and the situation calmed down afterwards, but the player remained marked by this exchange.
“Believe me or not, but there were at least 30 police cars at the end, with police armed with pistols, uzi and I don’t know what other weapons. I felt like a criminal who had done something , it’s crazy. I’ve never seen anything like it. Alex even had to lay on the ground, face down, legs and arms outstretched. It was crazy. I even got out of my socks, because I thought they’d let me put the this after. Five minutes later, when they asked me, I just said that I was from the Lakers game that we won against the Spurs. Then they realized the mistake, and everything went back to normal (…). Fortunately luckily, nothing happened to anyone and we got home safely.”
The story is also remembered that Boris Diaw experienced in 2005 during the same muscular intervention by Michigan police.
