The ID.Buzz Cargo, Volkswagen’s new 100% electric van

The marketing of Volkswagen’s new electric compact van, the ID.Buzz Cargo, is the milestone in this area for the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023. With this new 100% electric compact van whose styling is inspired by the now legendary With the Combi, VW has pulled off a major coup. It is more of an evocation than a continuation of style in the neo-retro fashion of the old model. However, it shows very successful lines, especially when it is decorated with a full two-tone livery (optional). The front end, with its large logo or even the “false” vents on the rear quarter pillar that recall those used to cool the Combi’s flat 4-cylinder, evoke the old model. The sides, very refined, also recall those of the Combi era with its wide body panels. The ID. However, the Buzz is a fully present vehicle with, for example, its stretched LED headlights. The set is very successful and makes the vehicle very attractive. “The ID. Buzz has met with great success since its launch. Its appearance and its connection to the historic Combi is attracting a lot of people. We have registered a lot of interest from SMEs and craftsmen who are very interested in the performance and the looks new to the model”believes Ghislain Laffite, director of Volkswagen commercial vehicles France.

A pure electric SUV

Unlike other models in the category, the ID.Buzz Cargo is the first compact van built on an electric platform and not the electrification of an existing model. The new Volkswagen VU is based on the group’s modular electric platform (Meb), which is already used for several car models from various VW brands. The ID.Buzz Cargo therefore uses an architecture close to the historic Combi as the motorization takes place on the rear axle. The batteries are located on the floor. They have a power of 77 kWh, which allows a maximum range of more than 400 kilometers (WLTP); in “real life”, it is quite possible to consider more than 300 kilometers with a full charge. Volkswagen offers several solutions for reloading the ID. Buzz with 11 kW AC (alternating current) charger for household socket connections, wallboxes or public charging stations. Then it takes more than 7 hours to recharge the ID batteries. buzz. It is also possible to have a DC charger (direct current) capable of taking high-power fast charges, up to 170 kW. The time to go from 5 to 80% battery is half an hour, according to VW. “With the ID. Buzz Cargo, we have developed a utility vehicle with a good look and an image vector, but not only; the autonomy and the performances allow many professionals to consider acquiring such a vehicle. And our very wide financing offer allows all professional buyers to find a solution adapted to their needs”said Ghislain Laffite.

High driving pleasure

The 204 hp engine and 310 Nm torque provide excellent acceleration and relaunch, both empty and loaded, despite the high weight of the model (more than 2,300 kilos). The maximum speed is limited by construction to 145 km/h; it is easy to achieve this and maintain this speed (note the size of the battery, which then decreases rapidly). ID.Buzz Cargo is convenient everywhere: in town, on the road and even on the motorway, which is not the case with all its competitors. The steering is light but precise and the braking is well supported by the energy recovery system (position “B”). It’s a pity that the gearbox control, located on the right side of the stalk (like all VW IDs) is very inconvenient. Although the finishes are less pleasant than the Van version (hard, black plastic is everywhere), the cabin is spacious and includes plenty of storage space. A central touch screen brings together most of the equipment’s controls. It is highly readable if not very practical and easy to understand.

Limited carrying capacity

The ID. The Buzz Cargo is currently only available in one size. An extended version should be launched by the end of the year. It offers a useful volume of only 3.9 m3 (even the loading space can accommodate two Europallets) and a maximum payload of 650 kilograms. They are very low cost in the category of compact vans to which the ID.Buzz Cargo belongs due to its dimensions and the same as the vans on offer. There is no doubt that this is the ID.Buzz Cargo’s biggest flaw, but if these values are enough for you, Volkswagen’s new electric van will give you pleasure every day. In terms of prices and equipment, you will have to go through a lot of options (two-tone paint, painted shields and handles, dual-zone air conditioning, navigation, etc.) to have an ID. Buzz Cargo is more fun to be with.
