Hyundai has two electric vehicles in the top 5
The year 2022 will be another tough year for the automotive industry in Canada, with a nearly 20% drop in overall sales. Production issues that choked dealer inventories and rising prices and interest rates in the second half of the year combined to make it extremely difficult to buy a new car this year. However, Canadian sales in 2022 are slightly up when it comes to electric vehicles.
Not that EVs don’t face the same issues as any other vehicle last year, but at least 2022 will see the launch or start of production of several new models, helping boost sales. Important names like Hyundai IONIQ 5the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Kia EV6 are big players in 2022, as well as several luxury electric vehicles such as BMW iXwhich had a successful first year.
Of course, Tesla remained the EV sales champion in Canada, finishing first and second with the Model 3 and Model Y respectively. As usual, Tesla’s Canadian sales are not officially reported. However, the numbers below, provided by the Automotive News data center, are generally considered as accurate as possible when it comes to Tesla sales.
The Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling electric vehicle in Canada in 2022, with approximately 14,400 units sold. The Model Y leapfrogged the Kona EV to take second place last year with about 8,000 units, while the Mustang Mach-E fell from fifth place in 2021 to third.
The Hyundai Kona EV, which finished as the second best-selling EV in Canada in 2021, dropped to fourth place, largely because the IONIQ 5, which finished in fifth place, had its first full year of production. With more than 10,000 Hyundai electric vehicles sold in Canada last year, Hyundai surpassed all other Canadian automakers except Tesla in total EV sales.

The Chevrolet Bolt also had a strong 2022. GM gave us numbers for the Bolt EUV (6th place) and the Bolt (7th place). Together, the Bolt has sold 5,963 units, making it the 4th best-selling EV in Canada by 2022. The Volkswagen ID.4 (2,166 units), the Nissan LEAF (1,542 units) and the new Kia EV6 (1,460 units) will complete the top 10.
