Samsung Display Releases Smartphone Screen Hinge With 360° Bend Capability

Samsung firmly believes in the folding screen smartphone and wants to remain the leader of innovation in the subject. While more and more models of this type have been announced for this year, the South Korean (through its Samsung Display branch) recently released a most ambitious panel.

Named Flex In & Out, this screen can bend 360 degrees, while most models are content with 180 degrees. So it can close itself, like the Huawei Mate X. What’s the use in everyday versatility.

The site The Verge got their hands on it and shared photos of the slab in question.

To build the system, it was necessary to build a new hinge in the shape of a drop of water, instead of the “U-shape” currently used. A system that brings the score down the fold, and must be democratized in the years to come. This rotation has an advantage: it does not require the inclusion of a second screen for closed use.

It is also possible that the next Galaxy Z Fold 5 will adopt it. Competitors like Oppo and Motorola have also looked into this matter. But Samsung Displays could easily reserve this innovation for external customers.

Samsung multiplied the attempts

This is not the first time that Samsung Displays has explored different formats. In 2021, the firm filed various detailed patents about a screen capable of folding in three. An interesting idea, since we’re getting closer to a tablet format when it opens. Closed, it retains the aspect ratio of a smartphone at 20:9 or 21:9.
