more powerful, more capable and more versatile than ever before
Along with the MacBook Pro with M2 Pro chip and M2 Max chip, Apple also released the new Mac mini equipped with M2 and M2 Pro chips. The new desktop computer is more powerful, better and more versatile than before, but above all more affordable than the previous model.
With the M2 chip, the Mac mini is more powerful, more efficient and more affordable. The new M2 Pro chip, meanwhile, enables the Mac mini to deliver pro-level performance for the first time and run high-performance workflows previously unthinkable in such a compact design. A Mac mini with an M2 or M2 Pro chip offers accelerated performance, more unified memory, and advanced connectivity options, including the ability to support up to two displays on the M2 chip model and up to three screens on M2 Pro chip model.
“Packing incredible capabilities and a wide range of connectivity options in a compact design, the Mac mini is used in a wide variety of settings and in countless ways. Now, we look forward to expanding those possibilities even further with the M2 and M2 Pro chips.”said Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of global marketing at Apple. “With increased performance at a lower price, the Mac mini with the M2 chip offers tremendous value. And for users looking for high professional performance, the Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip is an unrivaled desktop in its class.”He added.
Mac mini with M2 chip
The Mac mini with the M2 chip features an 8-core CPU with four high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores, as well as a 10-core GPU, perfect for people who want lightning-fast performance and don’t equal productivity at a higher affordable price. Common tasks like launching apps, multitasking or browsing the web are done at lightning speed.
For users who perform more intensive tasks, the Mac mini with the M2 chip can also handle more demanding workloads. With up to 24 GB of unified memory and 100 GB/s of bandwidth, activities such as photo editing in Adobe Photoshop are up to 50% faster than the previous generation model.
The M2 chip also gives the Mac mini a ProRes Accelerator Card, which makes tasks like video editing in Final Cut Pro more than twice as fast. The M2 chip model can also simultaneously play up to two streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps, or up to 12 streams of 4K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps. With such performance, the Mac mini is up to 5 times faster than the best-selling Windows desktop computer, offering incredible value for money whether it’s a first-time computer purchase or a new one. instead of Mac or PC.
Compared to the Mac mini with an Intel Core i7 processor, the Mac mini with the M2 chip offers:
- Up to 22x faster performance for machine learning (ML) image upscaling in Pixelmator Pro.
- Render a complex timeline 9.8 times faster in Final Cut Pro.
Compared to the previous generation Mac mini with the M1 chip, the Mac mini with the M2 chip offers:
- Up to 2.4x faster ProRes transcoding in Final Cut Pro.
- Up to 50% faster performance in Adobe Photoshop for filters and functions.
- Up to 35% smoother gameplay in Resident Evil Village.
Mac mini with M2 Pro chip
With the M2 Pro chip, the Mac mini delivers pro-level performance for the first time. Featuring a 12-core CPU with eight high-performance cores and four energy-efficient cores, the M2 Pro also packs a 19-core GPU and offers 200 GB/s of memory bandwidth – twice which is larger than the M2 – and up to 32 GB of memory. The next-generation Neural Engine is 40% faster than the M1 chip, to accelerate machine learning tasks such as video analysis and image processing.
Designed to dramatically increase video playback and encoding speeds while consuming very little power, the M2 Pro chip features a powerful media engine, which accelerates popular video codecs and can simultaneously -play up to five streams of ProRes 422 8K video at 30 fps, or up to 23 streams of ProRes 422 4K video at 30 fps. The M2 Pro chip model is up to 14 times faster than the fastest Intel-based Mac mini.
Compared to the 27-inch iMac with an Intel Core i7 processor and Radeon Pro 5500 XT4 graphics, the Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip offers:
- Up to 50% faster performance in Adobe Photoshop for filters and functions.
- Up to 5.5x faster image fusion for creating panoramas in Adobe Lightroom Classic.
- Up to 4.4x faster moving object tracking in Final Cut Pro.
Compared to the previous generation Mac mini with the M11 chip, the Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip offers:
- Up to 2.5x faster graphics performance in Affinity Photo.
- Up to 4.2x faster ProRes transcoding in Final Cut Pro.
- Up to 2.8x smoother gameplay in Resident Evil Village.
Design of the new Mac mini M2 and M2 Pro
Apple offers the same design in the new Mac mini. The machine still offers multiple connections with an array of ports. The M2 chip model has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports a maximum of two displays. The M2 Pro chip-equipped model includes four Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports up to three displays. In addition, the model with the M2 Pro chip can support an 8K display, a first for the Mac. Both models feature two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a Gigabit Ethernet port with a 10Gb option, and an upgraded headphone jack to support high-impedance headphones. In terms of wireless connectivity, the two new models also incorporate the latest standards with Wi-Fi 6E offering speeds up to twice as fast as before, as well as Bluetooth 5.3.
