The most important component in a PC in 2023 is right in front of our eyes

Many manufacturers presented new PCs at CES 2023. Taking stock, one trend stands out: the screen has become the king of innovation in the field.

Taking place at the beginning of January, the role of CES 2023 is to define the main trends in tech for the coming year. If we observe the many announcements in the PC field, a fairly clear trend emerges: the screen is at the center of all the innovations.

It must be said that, apart from the change of generation with Intel, AMD and Nvidia that always promise more performance, the rest of the laptop PC has changed little: the USB-C connector is still there, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or storage and RAM no longer knows the revolutions. Everything is changing before our eyes.

Oled continues to democratize the PC

For several years, we have known about Oled screens in Asus and in a more fragmented way in other brands. It should be said that the manufacturer now covers more than 60% of the Oled market in PC alone. This hegemony of Asus should end in 2023.

LG will specifically switch the range of LG Gram ultraportables to Oled in 2023, without changing the featherweight of its machines.

Samsung has notably unveiled an impressive 49-inch Oled screen in its Odyssey range. Lenovo is not left behind with some machines equipped with Oled tiles. The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus goes further by adding an e-ink screen on its second side to maximize autonomy in certain tasks. Acer also produced Oled monitors with LG Display at CES 2023.

And miniLED is an alternative

But Oled technology is not the alpha and omega of modern PC screens. Apple has already shown this with its MacBook Pro 14, a mini-LED screen can offer both very accurate colors, a good level of contrast and impressive brightness. A screen that then looks flawless, whether for work or play.

Undoubtedly this is what convinced Razer to highlight this technology with its new Razer Blade 16 and 18. In this regard, they refer to another trend at CES: the enlargement of panels thanks to the reduction of borders . Several manufacturers have announced PCs with more generous and more comfortable diagonals, especially for gaming PCs. HP, for its part, released an Omen laptop equipped with a 17-inch screen.

The video game still attracts many

Growth in the PC sector has for several years come from the gaming segment. At CES 2023, brands redoubled their efforts to convince. So we see machines like Acer Predators lined up with all the superlatives. Products that include the 13th generation Intel Core and the GeForce RTX 4000 for laptops.

Alienware’s 500Hz display

Here again we must not forget the screen: Acer announced QHD up to 250 Hz. Alienware offers a screen capable of up to 500 Hz.

There are also those who seek to bring the video game to new boxes. We imagine the evolution of GeForce Now in the field of cloud gaming, or Dell aiming to reinvent the gaming PC and work with better machines.

Even Chromebooks can handle video games with cloud gaming. Asus offers a really well-thought-out example on paper.

And content creators

To brighten up a living room, not only products intended for gamers can hit the mark. Brands also want to target “ content creators not to mention YouTube videographers and influencers. To attract them, you usually need a very high quality screen and state-of-the-art performance, but no good design of gaming products.

In this area, we must admit that Asus imposes itself with its new ProArt range that innovates this year with a very convincing 3D display. We discovered it on site at the Las Vegas show.

As for external monitors, Samsung presented a ViewFinity S9 screen capable of competing with the Apple Studio Display and Dell is betting on a practical side with a USB-C connection and 6K definition.

The innovative designs of CES 2023

CES is also the base for prototypes or innovative ideas that don’t necessarily find immediate success with the general public. Asus released a new generation of ROG Flow products that still try to combine ultraportable transformable products with a gaming machine.

But here Lenovo is hitting hard with the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i. This PC offers two 2.8K Oled touch screens in the image of the fiery Surface Neo. The brand promises that its design will allow us to improve our productivity, especially by using it as a large desktop PC if we have access to a table. It’s reminiscent of the Zenbook Fold we tested in 2022.

2023, the year of better PC displays

The transition to Oled or mini-LED, even higher display frequency, HDR and richer colors: the screen of our PCs will develop significantly in 2023. It is almost time, facing our smartphones and our tablets, the PC is one of the bad students in this area.

Switching to new generations of AMD, Intel or Nvidia chips will undoubtedly improve in terms of performance and autonomy, but this should not change our relationship with the machine or change the uses. A significant improvement in display quality, on the other hand, should provide a noticeable and immediate benefit for the user.

Hopefully these changes will quickly permeate the ranks of more accessible machines. CES is a show where brands present their technological showcases. It’s nice, but you still have to be able to afford it. This is one of the biggest IT challenges after inflation and the component crisis of 2020-2022.
