Brussels Motor Show 2023 – Renault Mégane E-Tech: attractive, but expensive

The Renault Mégane E-Tech is off to a very good start, with 15,580 units sold in France, placing it just behind the Tesla Model 3 (17,005 copies). We can imagine that it will be a good year in 2023, both for individuals and for corporate fleets that are gradually electrifying.

To convince, the car mainly relies on a seductive style, with a relatively high waistline and large 20-inch wheels that give it an almost sporty profile, while the subtle play of details (slender headlights, retractable door handles, etc.) relatively high-end character.

The Mégane 60 kWh weighs 1,624 kg, almost 200 kg less than the equivalent Volkswagen ID.3. It benefits from agility, performance and coverage.

A success that continues in the passenger compartment, where the ultra-modern design of the dashboard is served by selected materials and a very good level of finish.

Renault takes care of the packaging to sell a relatively expensive car, and we can say that the exercise was successful. The double screen is easy to use, and the cabin materials sign a real move upmarket.

The good rear room and the trunk volume of 440 liters, that is, 55 more than the Volkswagen ID.3, make the Mégane easy to live with, even if it is not strictly speaking a family car.

It remains to be determined which version to choose in an offer with two levels of power, but three levels of load. And that’s where things get tricky…or not, for that matter!

The entry-level is provided by the EV40 Boost charge version, whose engine will generate 130 hp and the autonomy is established, according to Renault, around 294 km. Priced at €39,000 excluding the €5,000 bonus, the car is equipped with a 22 kW AC (alternating current) charger, which allows it to travel up to 50 km in 30 minutes. Things get difficult on a long trip with an 85 kW charger that only allows you to recover 150 km in 35 minutes. During his car test, colleague Manuel Cailliot summed things up in his title: “Forbidden to travel? »

Paradoxically, the so-called intermediate version
Ironically, the intermediate version called “Super charge” is the least interesting of the range.

Therefore, the customer may be tempted to pay €3,000 more to switch to the EV60 “Super charge” version, which is powered by a 220 hp engine that provides sporty acceleration (7.4 s from 0 to 100 km/h ) and is equipped with 130 kW DC (direct current) charger, with which the car can travel up to 300 km in 30 minutes. Only here, this version must also be satisfied with an AC charger of only 7 kW, or at best 50 km an hour. Therefore, it does less well at this point than the main version, we believe we are dreaming!

Which brings us to the top-of-the-range version, called Optimum charge, which has a 220 hp motor, AC 22 kW and DC 130 kW charger, and is charged at €44,000. Despite the additional cost of €5,000, this is the version to choose, both in terms of daily use and ease of resale in the long term. Yes, it’s also very expensive for a compact sedan.

The Brussels Motor Show celebrated its 100th anniversary with a bang

The shows in Paris, Geneva and Frankfurt were for decades the most important shows in Europe, if not in the world.

Frankfurt was replaced by Munich, Geneva by Doha, now only the Paris World Cup remains in these tenors, its final version in 2022 is quite dull.
