Weather alert: Snow and ice in the north, heavy rain in the southeast

From in

Situation

France is in the middle of an air mass conflict, between gentle ocean air and cold Scandinavian air. Disturbances from the Atlantic cross the country. By colliding with cold air, they cause periods of snow or freezing rain north of the Loire. One of them will cross the northeastern part of France at the beginning of the evening, bringing snowfall or freezing rain between northern Burgundy and the south of the Grand Est region. Behind this disturbance, ice settles on wet or snow-covered roads between Normandy and the Paris Basin.

Here are the characteristics of this phase of snow and freezing rain:

– from 1 to 5 cm of snow in the plains with more snow from the center of Brittany to the hills of Normandy and in Lorraine with 5 to 10 cm, locally 15 cm.
– freezing rain falling with negative temperatures, making the roads from inland Brittany to the north of Burgundy, passing through the north of the Pays de la Loire and the south of the Paris Basin, icy.

In the south-east of France, a marked rainy-stormy period will become general across the south-eastern quarter of the country on Thursday, ending on Friday morning. Rainfall accumulations of 30 to 50 mm are forecast, with peaks between 80 and 100 mm in eastern Hérault, Gard, Var and especially western Corsica.

Observation

This Wednesday

At 9 pm, light to moderate snowfall affected southern Lorraine and Alsace. On the ground, usually observe between 1 and 3 cm of fresh snow. Beware of some freezing rain that could affect an area between the Langres plateau and Territoire de Belfort.

At 18 o’clock, after a mid-day lull, snow and freezing rain continued from southern Champagne and Lorraine to Alsace. North of a Troyes/Epinal line, it is snow alone, sticking to the ground at negative temperatures. On the other hand, from the south of Lorraine to the south of Alsace, freezing rain falls, between Chaumont, Colmar, Belfort and Sochaux. This rain falling on the frozen ground is causing black ice to spread across this area for the next few hours, making traffic conditions dangerous. If you can, avoid passing through these northeastern regions tonight, unless you have to!

At 15h: this early afternoon is a time of calm. In the northeastern departments, if the rain stopped in the Grand Est, no thaw was observed. So be careful if you drive on untreated roads. In the direction of the Doubs and Territoire de Belfort, a slight thaw returned with temperatures between 1 and 3°C, excluding relief. This improvement allows you to move around.
In the direction of the Paris basin and a large northwestern part, the subsidence gradually ends. Near an axis that stretches from the north of the Côtes d’Armor to the Loiret, snow, mixed rain and snow or freezing rain can be seen near it.

At 12, clear improvement in Normandy and Ile-de-France, with the return of a pale winter sun. At temperatures close to 0 ° C, snow remained on the ground, but the thickness did not exceed 0.5 to 3 cm. On the other hand, snowfall continued in the north of Lorraine while freezing rain affected Belfort and the Haut-Rhin department. Elsewhere, although no more rain, many icy roads were reported in Champagne and Lorraine.

At 09:00, light snowfalls continue to sprinkle the ground with negative temperatures from Normandy to Picardy, northern Paris and towards Champagne and northern Lorraine. Generally there will be a maximum of 1 to 3 cm but accumulations will thicken north of the Vosges and Lorraine.
Beware of ice with freezing rain falling in the south of these regions, from Sarthe to Beauce and especially between Paris and Orléans, and from Loiret to the south of Seine-et-Marne, Marne, Haute-Marne , Haute-Saône and the southern half of Alsace (freezing rain in Colmar and snow in Strasbourg).

At 06:30, very light snowfall worries Ile-de-France with dust sticking to the ground due to slightly negative temperatures (0° to -1°C). The snowfall was more marked in Lower Normandy, with a bleached landscape and 1 to 3 cm even on the beaches (Deauville, Ouistreham).
In the south, ice was reported between the departments of Eure-et-Loir, Loiret (Orléans), Yonne and Aube.
In Brittany, light mist sometimes mixed with melting snow was observed with 0° in Dinard and +1° in Rennes, requiring caution on secondary roads due to the risk of ice.

Evolution

At night, the snowfall is easing then stopping almost everywhere in the North-East, except between the south of the Vosges and the Mulhouse region where freezing rain is expected to last. Roads will remain icy on the secondary network due to the drop in temperature and general frost from the north of the Loire to Alsace.

In Brittany, the arrival of a new disturbance will first bring rain. They will turn to snow in the north of the region by the end of the evening, with a risk of freezing rain in the center of the region.

Thursday morning, the risk of snow and freezing rain will remain in Brittany. Everywhere else, the dry spell returns, but the wet roads are often icy. Be particularly careful with the secondary network.

Here are the characteristics of this phase of snow and freezing rain:

– 1 to 3 cm of snow in the plains with more snow in Lorraine and northern Alsace with 5 to 8 cm, locally.
– icy roads from inland Brittany to the north of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, passing through the north of the Pays de la Loire and the south of the Paris Basin.
– traffic conditions that can be difficult, especially in untreated secondary networks.

In the south-east of France, a marked rain-storm episode will be general across the southeastern quarter of the country on Thursday, ending on Friday morning. Rainfall accumulations of 30 to 40 mm are expected, with peaks between 60 and 80 mm over the Cévennes, Var and especially western Corsica.
