Missing kidnapped baby found in back seat of stolen car hours after suspect arrested – Boston News, Weather, Sports
(CNN) – Two Indianapolis police officers spent the day searching for a missing baby in a stolen car when they stopped for a meal and came to their senses.
A woman suspected of stealing a black 2010 Honda Accord was arrested earlier today on December 22, but the vehicle remains missing. More urgently, baby Kason Thomass, who was in the car with twin Kyair Thomass when he was robbed three days ago in Columbus, Ohio, has not been found.
“It’s time for us to decompress because we’re disappointed we can’t find him,” said Sgt. Shawn Anderson of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department told CNN affiliate WISH-TV. “And then God opened heaven to us and almost took it and put it in our hands.”
At the same time the officers stopped to eat, two women were also hungry in their search for the same baby, they told the Indianapolis Star.
Indianapolis resident Shyann Delmar and her cousin, Mecka Curry, told the newspaper they had been following their own trail of clues to the missing baby since Wednesday.
According to the Star, Delmar’s interest in the case began on Tuesday, when he spoke to a woman he and Curry said resembled the kidnapping suspect.
The cousins arranged a meeting with the woman on Thursday and helped lead police to their location, they told the Star, and the woman was taken into custody. Police announced the arrest of kidnapping suspect Nalah Jackson that same afternoon. CNN contacted Indianapolis police to verify if the woman known only to cousins as “Mae” was indeed Jackson.
The suspect, Nalah Jackson, 24, is awaiting extradition in Columbus, where she faces two counts of kidnapping. A warrant for Jackson’s arrest was filed in Franklin County Court, according to an online filing. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office also charged Jackson with battery with bodily waste, online court records show.
It is not known if Jackson has an attorney.
On the evening of December 19, Kason and Kyair Thomass were left inside a running car while their mother picked up a DoorDash order in Columbus. When he returned, the vehicle was gone, along with the twins, according to Columbus police.
Kyair was found abandoned near Dayton International Airport in the early morning hours of Dec. 20, police said. But it was several days before Kason was found in Indianapolis – about 175 miles from where he was taken.
And even after Jackson’s arrest, Kason was never found.
The cousins told the Star that, based on a bus timetable the woman had left in their car, they decided to follow the bus route to look for cars buried in the snow.
There, outside a Papa John’s was the stolen car, with a baby inside, the newspaper reported.
Cousins told the newspaper they saw officers nearby and reported them.
CNN contacted Indianapolis and Columbus police trying to reach Delmar and Curry. The Indianapolis Star reported that police radio communications, social media posts and what authorities released matched what Delmar and Curry told them.
In a tweet, Indianapolis police thanked “everyone who helped find” Kason but did not specifically mention Delmar or Curry.
“When we saw him he was cold, it’s true, but he’s awake, he’s breathing, he’s moving a bit,” he added. El said in an interview with WBNS-TV. “His eyes are wide open and trying to take it all in.”
Kason’s family said he was doing everything expected under the circumstances, the station reported. LaFonda Thomass, the twins’ grandmother, said she was shocked by the discovery.
“This is going to be the best Christmas ever,” he told WBNS-TV. “I am very excited. It’s a miracle.”
