Chassis, connectors, screen of Asus ROG Strix Scar G533ZW-LN086W
The DNA of the Asus ROG Strix Scar is determined gamer with its diagonal that divides it aluminum cover in half as well as the backlit ROG logo on the side. The chassis is drawn in a beveled silhouette with aggressive edges and geometric shapes. When closed (and off), the aesthetic is sober with a matte black color and relatively few details on the back of the cover, but wait to turn on the PC, the lower part of the base lights up, like 4-zone multi-color backlit keyboard and the logo on the back for a guaranteed Christmas tree effect. Small particularity of this model, a virtual numeric keypad is available on the touchpad (NumPad). With no physical numeric keypad, this comes in handy if you need to repeatedly enter numbers.
Small precision that matters, to keep the balance of its borderless screen, Asus is quite simple removed the webcam. It’s a bummer though that its impractical positioning on the GL504 left us a bit confused.
Question measurements, the weight rotates 2.3kg with a thickness of 27mm. Thanks to the tapered sides, you get a width of only 354 mm. It is well optimized for a 15 inch gamer.
It can also be seen at the level of the screen that catches the eye at first glance. And for good reason, highlighted by a thin frame, it uses high-end specs for gamers with a very high refresh rate of 240 Hz. Fluidity in games is bound to be affected though at this level it’s hard to see the difference compared to 144Hz. The benefit is still there but be aware that it is not possible to take advantage of such a high frequency in all games. Moreover, the definition WQHD (2560 x 1440px) offers an important display finesse to make the most of the graphics on the screen while the matte treatment limits the effect of ambient light on the screen, improving gaming comfort (especially in dark scenes).
The PC provides various connections, which are gathered on the left side and on the back. We found everything you need for gamers, namely a Gigabit Ethernet port, an HDMI 2.1 output, three USB 3.2 ports, a USB Type-C Gen2 and a port USB 4 Type-C Thunderbolt 4. The latest generations of Wifi AX and Bluetooth 5.2 modules are also on the menu.
Performance, autonomy of the Asus ROG Strix Scar G533ZW-LN086W
Performance is at the heart of the ROG Strix Scar G533ZW-LN086W which directly targets gamers with a graphics card GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. This high-end solution is capable of rendering smooth WQHD 144/240 Hz in all the user’s favorite games, taking advantage of Ray-Tracing in games that match sharp details. The RTX 3070 Ti is also essential for software that uses GPU computing power to speed up processing. This is for example the case with multimedia under Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere/Photoshop, which will interest creators, especially with 8 GB GDDR6 of dedicated memory.
Then there’s the heart of this gaming machine that doesn’t make performance concessions thanks to it Core i9-12900H (14 P cores / 8 E cores). It is currently one of the most powerful processors to be found in a mobile machine. Related to 32 GB of RAM, this expert combination makes this ROG Strix Scar suitable for almost all fields of use and expert gaming. This is especially true of the best creative programs (Vegas Pro, Premiere Pro or Lightroom to name a few) that require a lot of computing power for rendering. Of course, the in-game support is flawless and you have a good amount of RAM to stay productive at all times.
Storage is as important inside this Strix Scar 15 as it is entrusted to two 1TB dedicated SSD (NVMe PCIe) on RAID0. The system has to win compared to a configuration with a mechanical hard drive because of the loading speed offered by the SSD. This type of storage ensures almost instantaneous on and off phases, transfers calculated in seconds, or quick software launches where mechanical support has indicated large latencies.
Note as a reminder elsewhere that an SSD is inherently quieter, more stable and more efficient than a hard drive. And if it is often tackled for its too low storage capacity, it is not so here because it provides 1 TB, enough to allow the installation of many heavy games and the storage of your entire library a toy. Note that it is possible to install a total of up to 3 SSDs inside the Scar 15, two of which are in RAID 0.
Finally, for a 15 inch of this type, the 90 Whr battery is welcome and allows it to exceed 8 to 9 hours of battery life when browsing the Web with active WiFi. It’s really not bad for a PC gamer, especially with this level of performance/screen.
