How do I post to Twitter and Mastodon at the same time?

Will Twitter explode? Is Mastodon worth it? Can’t decide between two social networks? You can always send your messages on both platforms simultaneously. There are tools for that.

Is there still Twitter tomorrow? This question seemed unbelievable just a few weeks ago. But now, the social network is going through an unprecedented crisis, which is largely caused by the arrival of Elon Musk as director. Since the end of October 2022, the American billionaire has greatly destabilized the organization of the group. Now, Twitter seems to be in danger.

Under these conditions, the temptation to escape to the large aviary is great. Some are already recovering their Twitter archive. Others moved to Mastodon hoping to find peace and stability. But, it’s not always easy to give up on Twitter, especially since the platform isn’t (yet) off the ground.

A solution to this problem — leave or stay? — can consist of using a tool that allows you to publish simultaneously on Mastodon and on Twitter. By doing this, you can ensure your presence on both platforms and prepare for a smooth transition to Mastodon, should Twitter disappear. Your last messages have been sent to Mastodon.

Posting the same message on Twitter and Mastodon

To publish the same message on both platforms – crossposter, in jargon – you must of course have an account with each of them. You also need to select the instance of Mastodon you want to land on. If this is the case, the next step is to go through a third-party service that will link your two profiles.

On Reddit, two tools are mentioned regularly: Mastodon Twitter Crossposter and Moa.Party. The first is available in French and the second in English. The interface changes in both cases, but the idea is the same: you must, from the first or second service, allow read and write access, as well as some other actions.

Important point: Be careful how you fill in your Mastodon name on the Moa.Party or Mastodon Twitter Crossposter. It must be given in a certain form, ie [email protected]_instance and not the other way around (you should also fill in the instance, since the service is decentralized).

A warning: from a strict security perspective, you should know that these services have partial access to your accounts. This does not mean that malicious actions on their part will occur, but it is a risk that must be considered. If one of these services gets hacked, for example, it could allow an attacker to post to your accounts.

Remember that you can revoke access to your Twitter and Mastodon account at any time. You can do this directly in the Mastodon Twitter Crossposter and Moa.Party, but also from the Twitter settings, in ” Connected apps “. You can also check on this occasion if other apps are linked to your account and cleaning.

Third-party apps that have access to your Twitter (or Mastodon) account aren’t necessarily a bad thing. This is convenient for using a third-party client, instead of the official app (like the Talon Android app). Ditto if you want to use a service to support you (like Block Pary App), to filter your mentions.

Once you’ve connected your two accounts to the third-party service of your choice, make sure you’ve got the right settings. The Moa.Party defaults may be fine, but in the case of the Mastodon Twitter Crossposter, you’ll need to adjust some settings. In Mediapart, the user mollo indicates which are the correct settings to handle.

Then all you have to do is use Mastodon or Twitter to post whatever pops into your head.

Remember, however, that on November 18, the operation may seem to you that something is wrong: the situation on the Twitter side is not encouraging, with the removal of a large number of employees, including in critical departments. The social network is likely to row or crash. On Mastodon’s side, according to authorities, the influx of people can also put servers in difficulty.

In our case, we saw noticeable slowdowns on the main instance of Mastodon (mastodon.social) in our test post. For a moment, we thought it wasn’t working, but he got through anyway. According to the timestamp, the message posted on Twitter arrived one minute later on Mastodon.
