In Atlanta, the Pelicans are still bowing in “overtime”

Three extensions, three losses! Certainly, the Pelicans struggle to make a difference in close games, and tonight they lost 124-121 in Atlanta. So it was the 4th loss of the season for Zion Williamson’s teammates, and three were conceded in the extra period. Last night, they thought they had done the hardest part in “money time” after clawing back a 13-point deficit, only for CJ McCollum to tie the game and then Zion Williamson to take advantage with less than two minutes to go. But Dejounte Murray, after a solo number, tied it at 109-109 with four seconds left, and Brandon Ingram’s winning shot hit the back of the circle.

In overtime, Atlanta’s “big men” made the difference with two alley-oops from Clint Capela to give a five-point lead (119-114) after this 3-pointer from John Collins in the corner to increase the gap at +6 (122-116). But Herb Jones revived the suspense with a tap, followed by a throw (124-121). At the back, he deflects a ball, and offers an equalizing ball to his teammates. We wait for Ingram or McCollum for the shot, but Devonte’ Graham is found in the corner. He was embarrassed by John Collins. Apparently the referees whistled for a foul to give three throws, before Graham’s foot finally whistled on the line!

In the confusion, Atlanta won 124-121 for its sixth victory in nine games.

WHAT YOU SHOULD REMEMBER

Zion Williamson misses the end. Still strong, Zion did a lot of damage to grab the extension. But then he broke down physically, until leaving a minute from the end. Fortunately, nothing serious because it was just cramps. The good news is that he went back-to-back and even broke his season high in points (29).

Failed heist. Back-to-back, the Pelicans chased the score the entire game, and they took the lead just two minutes into the game. It was in “money time” after recovering a gap of 13 points. In the final five minutes, they held off Trae Young (0 of 5 on shots) to bite into their delay and keep going. Brandon Ingram would have the victory ball, but his difficult fadeaway would hit the back of the circle.

TOPS and FLOPS

Clint Capela. He was the Hawks’ big man of the night, and he set the tone from the first quarter. On the contrary, Jonas Valanciunas was there, but he dominated it in mobility and in the air with 21 points, 19 rebounds and 4 blocks, 10 of 15 on shots. He already had his double-double in his pocket at halftime.

Dejounte Murray. He took overtime with this tricky shot after a few dribbles, then scored the first four points of overtime. Young stopped the “money time”, he took things in the attack, while signing a “triple-double”: 22 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds.

The McCollum-Jones pair. Facing one of the best pairs of backs in the NBA, the New Orleans backcourt came to a standstill. CJ McCollum remains a formidable metronome, and he’s more active than the Blazers. As for Herb Jones, he has been indispensable, and not content with good defense against Trae Young, he keeps hope alive through his activity.

⛔️ The Pelicans bench. 15 points on 5 of 17 shooting for New Orleans substitutes who didn’t weigh in on the meeting. Only Larry Nance Jr. and Jose Alvarado gave the punch, but it wasn’t enough, especially in the back-to-back where the starters’ legs were heavy.
